Carbon Steel is an alloy of carbon and iron. Carbon steel contains up to 2% of carbon in the Steel. Although, It contains many other elements but quantity such that they do not effect the properties of the Steel. When the percentage of carbon increases in the Steel, the hardness of the Steel increases but the properties like brittleness also increases that is undesirable. Increasing the Carbon percentage also decreases the ductility,  malleability and weldability.

On the basis of Carbon percentage, carbon steel is divided into three categories.
1. Low Carbon Steel
2. Medium Carbon Steel
3. High Carbon Steel

Types of Carbon Steel

Types of the Carbon Steel is based on the carbon percentage in the Steel.

Low Carbon Steel

This type of Steel is widely used in the field of manufacturing. It has good ductility, malleability and weldability. Its strength is less than the other Carbon Steel. The use of this steel is very economical. It has low amount of carbon, that is why it has less hardness than other steel. Due to its properties, this type of material used for many industries. It has other properties like conductivity and ferromagnetism which makes it suitable for respective industries.

Medium Carbon Steel

It has Moderate  ductility and weldability. It has balanced strengths and sufficient strength. It is stronger than low Carbon Steel but weaker than high Carbon Steel. Its hardness is also greater than low carbon steel but less than high Carbon Steel.

High Carbon Steel

It is high hardness, high strength material. The carbon percentage makes it brittle then the medium carbon steel. But it is stronger than the medium Carbon Steel. The ductility, malleability, weldability is less then the medium and low Carbon Steel.

Carbon Content in Steel

1.Low Carbon Steel

The Steel with the carbon percentage  0.08% to 0.3% is called low Carbon Steel.

It can be further subdivided into two categories

Dead Steel

The Steel with the percentage of carbon 0.08% to 0.15% is called dead Steel.

Mild steel

the carbon percentage in the mild steel is from 0.15% to 0.3%.

2. Medium Carbon Steel

It has the car on percentage from 0.3% to 0.6%.

3. High Carbon Steel

Carbon percentage in the high Carbon Steel is from 0.6% to 1%.
